The main variety of Colombian coffee is small-grain coffee. The plant is a small tree or large shrub, 5-8 meters high, usually with many branches at the base; the old branches are grayish white, the nodes are swollen, and the young branches are glabrous and flattened. The leaves are thin leathery, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 6-14 cm long, 3.5-5 cm wide, with a long acuminate tip, the acuminate part is 10-15 mm long, the base is cuneate or slightly obtuse, rarely rounded, the entire margin or shallowly wavy, glabrous on both sides, with or without small pits in the axils of the lower veins; the midrib is convex on both sides of the leaf blade, and the lateral veins are 7-13 on each side; the petiole is 8-15 mm long; the stipules are broadly triangular, with a conical long tip or awn tip on the top of the young branches, and the tip on the old branches is often a sharp tip, 3-6 mm long. Several cymes are clustered in leaf axils, each with 2-5 flowers, without peduncle or with very short peduncle; flowers are fragrant, with pedicels 0.5-1 mm long; bracts are ± fused at base, dimorphic, 2 of which are broadly triangular, nearly equal in length and width, and the other 2 are lanceolate, twice as long as wide, and leaf-shaped; calyx tube is tubular, 2.5-3 mm long, calyx limb is truncated or with 5 small teeth; corolla is white, length varies with variety, generally 10-18 mm long, often 5-lobed at top, rarely 4 or 6-lobed, lobes are often longer than corolla tube, apex is often obtuse; anthers extend out of corolla tube, 6-8 mm long; style is 12-14 mm long, stigma is 2-lobed, 3-4 mm long. When ripe, the berries are broadly oval, red, 12-16 mm long, 10-12 mm in diameter, with a hard membranous exocarp and a fleshy mesocarp with a sweet taste; the seeds are convex on the back, flat on the ventral side, with longitudinal grooves, 8-10 mm long, and 5-7 mm in diameter.
